If you’ve seen the previews, you know that Click contains this amazing, supernatural something, something that can turn on absolutely anything! “Universal” remote control? No, it’s Kate Beckinsale!!!
The workaholic, husband, and father of two, Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) has had it. He needs something to make his life simpler and less chaotic. He decides to get a universal remote so he can at least turn on his TV without opening his garage door. The only store open late that night is Bed, Bath and Beyond. A very strange man (Christopher Walken) in the “Beyond” department tells him he has just he thing for him. It’s a remote control that hasn’t really hit the market yet, but good guys need a break from time-to-time, so he gives it to him for free. The catch is, he can’t return it. What a sweet deal for Michael. Especially when he finds out that the remote controls everything…literally everything. He can fast forward through fights with his wife, he can mute his barking dog and even skip ahead to when he gets promoted. The trouble is, the universal remote learns his preferences and automatically starts skipping big parts of Michaels life. The very thing that was supposed to make his life easier is ruining everything. He misses his kids growing up, his marriage is destroyed and he looses everything important to him. It now may cost him his life to put everything right.
Click is perhaps Adam Sandler’s finest work. It’s hilarious . . . much funnier, in fact, than the previews suggest. And, the premise is smart and the story surprisingly well developed. Perhaps most unexpected, the movie makes a point that, though not novel, is nonetheless profound. Sandler even delivers some convincing dramatic acting! It runs a little too long, and Adam Sandler definitely still deserves to be punched in the face for the movie Spanglish, but Click is a big time, big budget, big satisfying success for its audience.
